Spalling Repairs
Concrete chipping, cracking and flaking, known as spalling, is the result of repeatedly freezing and thawing of concrete. Or perhaps during installation, too much water was mixed into the compound mixture before it was applied. Spalling, if left uncorrected, will lead to complete failure of the concrete panel.
Spalling repair is a do-it-yourself-project, providing the damaged area is minimal.
Concrete patching compounds are available at your local hardware or home improvement stores. Also, for your protection, purchase a dust mask and eye goggles.
The first step in spalling repair is to remove all loose and delaminated concrete. A good method for chipping away spalling is to use a drill with a paddle bit. Then thoroughly sweep all debris from the area you will be filling and the surrounding area as well.
Read the patching compound manufacturer's mixing instructions carefully before you begin.
Fill the area with the compound mixture and smooth it until it is level with the rest of the surface. There is no need to buy an expensive tool for leveling; a simple 2x4 block of wood will serve this purpose. Once your patchwork is completely smooth, cover with a sheet of plastic for 48 hours. After the first 24 hours, remove the plastic and mist the newly laid concrete with water to prevent it from drying too quickly. If you have pets, be sure to place a barrier around your work area.
Periodically inspect all concrete areas in your home, patio, sidewalk, etc. Repairing any spalling, no matter how small will prevent a simple project from becoming a complex project down the road.
